Thule
Believed to be Earth’s northernmost point in many ancient and medieval cartographical texts, Thule has endured a slew of contradictory descriptions. Depending on the source, it’s either a solid island (possibly modern day Orkney [Scotland], Saaremaa [Estonia], Smola [Norway] or Iceland), or a more nebulous, etheric area on the edge of the known world. Its presence on historical maps hasn’t shed conclusive light onto what—or if—it really was, but its mystery has inspired some brilliant minds.
